A brief message for peace

22nd of February 2008 at 16:48

We're very proud to see peace featured on A Brief Message, a site which features concise viewpoints on design in the real world.

The article was written by Kate Ward, who designed the Peace: 50 Years of Protest book. Kate discusses the copyright free status of Holtom's peace symbol, and ponders how this affects the design process.

The article is beautifully illustrated by Chris Rubino.

A giant symbol of peace on Trafalgar Square?

9th of January 2008 at 12:41

London's Trafalgar Square could be home to a giant 100ft (30.5m) illuminated peace sculpture, if artists Bob & Roberta Smith win the commission to crown the square's one empty plinth, the Guardian reports.

The plinth has been empty for 150 years, but is now used to display specially commissioned works. Bob & Roberta's wind-powered illuminated peace sculpture is competing against five other ideas, including a sculpture of meerkats which artist Tracey Emin describes as representing "unity and safety".

Find out more about the commission at fourthplinth.co.uk.

CND conference

1st of November 2007 at 13:51

Originally created for the first anti-nuclear demonstration march from London to Aldermaston in 1958, which was also the birth of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the symbol created by graphic and textile designer Gerald Holtom was constructed using semaphore signals for the letters N and D.

In March 2008 CND will be celebrating their 50th birthday with a conference on nuclear issues to be held in London between February 16 and 17 2008. For further details on other CND anniversary activity visit http://www.cnduk.org/pages/diary.html
